The Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally-recognized accrediting agency and is a recognized member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Today, more than 4 million Americans are enrolled in DETC-accredited institutions, and more than 110 institutions are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation is the process of evaluating a school or educational program to determine whether it meets the standards set up by an accrediting organization.

DETC accreditation provides a school with a nationally-recognized accreditation that covers all of its available distance education courses. The accreditation is based on the method of instruction, and covers all online and correspondence courses and programs.

To become accredited, a school has to undergo an extensive inspection performed by an outside examining agency and submit instructional materials for a thorough review. The process is repeated every five years.

Why is accreditation important?

Accreditation is important because it assures current and prospective students that the academic programs as well as staff, support and related resources have been reviewed and critiqued to guarantee their highest quality.

By attending a DETC-accredited school, you have the assurance that the school:

  • Has set educational goals for students who enroll
  • Offers formal, organized learning experiences and services that enable students to meet these stated goals
  • Can show that students and graduates have benefited from the learning experiences provided
